At Western Refining, we understand the critical importance of a healthy and safe environment. That’s why we continue to invest millions of dollars each year into our refineries for the production of fuels in an environmentally responsible manner. Our refineries use state-of-the-art equipment and highly skilled personnel to produce the fuel we need, and we do it with a firm commitment to the well-being of our air, water, and earth.

As part of this ongoing commitment to protect our environment, we have partnered with Du Pont to build a sulfuric acid and regeneration plant at our El Paso refinery. It will help us reduce sulfur dioxide emissions in the processing of sulfur gases by over 70%. The end result is cleaner air. In addition, we are installing the best available air controls at our refineries, adding to the numerous existing air controls already in place.

Perhaps what most clearly demonstrates our care for the environment is what we call a “turn-around”. Periodically, we shut down an entire facility, to ensure that safety and environmental standards are up to date and maintained. Hundreds of specialists from all over the country thoroughly inspect, check, and test every piece of equipment before it goes back on line or is replaced. It’s a lot of work, but we think it’s worth it.

When it comes to the environment, we know that what we take care of today is what we leave for the future. It’s everyone’s responsibility.
